Amazing Month: Earth Day, Sierra Club, Conversation, Sean Kelly

Wow what an amazing couple of weeks. Gave a talk at Earth Day in San Francisco, then I returned to the Bay area to take part in climate talk at the Sierra Club with Guy McPherson and Jamen Shively of Radish.org and I produced and moderated an amazing panel discussion on our Climate Crisis and Human transformation with Guy McPherson, Sean Kelly, Jamen Shively and Peter Russell at the New Living Expo in San Mateo, CA.

I also got to participate in a group meeting in Berkeley to discuss our feelings as we experience the consciousness shift and the great unraveling at the same time.

I will post videos on these public events as they become available.

In the meantime I did a couple of interviews for extension radio this week, and check them out Extinction Radio Episode 71, 5th May 2017.  This starts with Deb Ozarko, Jennifer Hynes and Peter Melton in Conversation at Part One, at 1:10, and goes to 1:05:12, or about 55 minutes long.

This is followed by Interview – Sean Kelly and me, in Part Two, at 4:57 and goes to 48:48 or about 44 minutes long.

Rick Siegenthaler more than earns his reputation, as Jennifer Hynes so aptly says, for ‘real genius’, for his efforts.  In this case, a lengthy video of the discussion I had with Sean Kelly of The California Institute of Integral Studies thankfully rendered by Rick, here.  Sean’s CV is here also.

Peter Wadhams Interview, Chico Sustainability Conference

When it comes to a real, true, and credentialled discussion about rapid climate change, it is hard to get much better than A Farewell to Ice senior scientist and author Dr. Peter Wadhams, and it is my honor to interview him on the last episode of Extinction Radio 68, from March 22nd, 2017.  This is in Part One, introduction starts at 0:00, interview proper at 2:06, and goes to 48:17.

Additionally, recently, I led a workshop at a State Sustainability Conference in Chico, and want to share the video, here.  This is about 63:00 long.  Those of you with access to Facebook, can access it here.  This was from the fourth week of March.

Our World in Chaos

I am stepping deeper into my new passion as a “Climate Chaos Messenger.”  I think we need to discuss and realize the climate emergency we are already in.  As we do this, we will dare to call out the greatest of our humanity and what lies beyond that. Here is my guest commentary on the topic from the Chico News and Review this week.

Our World in Chaos, By Peter Melton. This article was published on 04.28.16:

‘The author, a part-time Chico resident, is an author, promoter, spiritual coach and “climate chaos messenger.”

‘Now that the dust has settled from the rah-rah, back-patting sessions of the Paris Climate Summit, the world’s citizens face the daily news (often even in the mainstream media now) that things are shifting quickly—much faster than previously expected. The predicament formerly known as “global warming” or “climate change” is now called “abrupt climate disruption” or “climate chaos.”

‘Many conservative projections show drastic changes occurring by 2100; however, if things are happening faster than expected, then those changes could happen much sooner. Scientists crowned 2015 as the hottest year on record, and now 2016 is likely to take that crown.

‘We’re already seeing big changes: oceans acidifying, coral reefs dying, arctic ice melting. We have unprecedented fires and floods, climate refugees, extreme weather events—and this is just the beginning.’

Earth Day, Phantoms of a Pathology

Strongly recommend, you all read:  ‘Earth Day and the Phantoms of a Pathological Culture‘, by Kenn Orphan.  It starts:

I must start with a confession. I have always been troubled by the concept of Earth Day. I understand its origin and why it came to be, but as an environmentalist I see it as window dressing an unfolding disaster of monumental proportions. It’s not that it is useless. Raising awareness is never useless.

But over the years it has morphed from an almost spiritual movement for ecological consciousness and justice into an opportunity for corporations and politicians to tout their empty gestures at “saving the planet” all while they mercilessly plunder it. It also has the effect of neutralizing public outrage at the dire state our world is in. It spreads an all too pervasive “feel goodism” to a situation that is truly existential, not only for countless other species on the planet but for our own.”  Continues at link.
